As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I can’t help but get a little emotional…in a good way! I went back and read my post from last year and it’s amazing (and shocking) to see how far Peyton has come. She was a tiny little baby, looking more like a newborn than her actual age of 5 months old. P was hooked up to oxygen and nowhere near ready to sample the turkey and fixins.
Fast forward to 2014 and Peyton is more than willing to dive into mashed potatoes and stuffing! She may be tiny, but this girl has a HUGE appetite. And for those of you guessing the size of our turkey from my Facebook post, Peyton is actually a bit larger. She’s 19lbs, while the bird is a whopping 18 lbs–a huge turkey for only 5 of us! Lately, Peyton has been working on using a spoon, which has led to plenty of messes in the kitchen…check out the pictures below of her first encounter with feeding herself (Leda had a field day snapping this candid moment!).
As I reflect on what I’m thankful for, good health comes to mind. Last year was full of heartache as we said hello and goodbye to Parker and Abby. Our survivor Peyton was so fragile, her health a constant worry. And I can’t forget my own health, which included a brush with death on what should have been the best day of our lives (the birth of our triplets). Needless to say, we are beyond grateful for our health this year. Peyton is growing and becoming a crazy little toddler. She only had one little bump in the road, a quick weeklong hospital stay this fall. As for me, I’m doing great! We still have a month to go, but 2014 is shaping up to be the first time in 4+ years that I have gone a full year without needing some sort of surgery. Quite the reason to say “thanks”!
Another big thank you goes out to our family and friends. You got know Mr. Skry through his recent blog post. In short, he is my rock. He makes me laugh non-stop, tells me that I’m beautiful every single day and he makes heart melt when I see what a great dad he is to Peyton. Miss P sure has Ryan wrapped around her finger! And while I’m far away from my family, I’m so grateful for technology, which allows us to stay in touch. Peyton loves to show off her latest moves to MeeMee and Papa through FaceTime! As for my friends, I’m a lucky girl. Whether it’s my childhood friends in California or those I’ve met along the way (from Michigan to Illinois and out west to Oregon), I have a huge support system that has helped me in this journey of motherhood. Sometimes it’s a simple text message or a quick phone call, but it makes realize that my life is full of so much love.
And finally, I am thankful for all of you…the thousands who read my blog. Some of you are friends and family, others complete strangers that I have yet to meet. But, I feel connected to each and every one of you because of my triplets and because of “Perfectly Peyton”. I’m thankful that you have been along for the ride, to see Peyton overcome so much and blossom into a beautiful little girl. I’m thankful that you care enough about me to read this blog well after my chaotic life began to calm down. Because of you, I’m doing well. As I’ve said before, writing is my therapy. Thanks to your comments on here and on social media, my heart swells with pride for my family and my eyes well up from happiness, knowing so many people love our family like their own. So during this week of thanks, a big thank you from the bottom of my heart. Have a wonderful holiday, filled with laughter and too much food. And my advice: go for stretchy pants…much more comfortable as you go for seconds! I’ll leave you with some adorable pictures of Miss P. She even got her first hair cut, thanks to my Nicu friend who just happens to be a stylist. Great job Brittny…Peyton is stylin’ with her bob!
